Tips For Filling Your Self-Storage Unit Like A Pro

Posted on

If you were to walk through a storage facility and look inside all of the units, you would see a few where items are scattered about, a few where things are stacked, but haphazardly, and a few where the contents are truly well organized. Of course, everyone wants to have one of the well-organized storage units. So how do you go about loading yours in a way that makes passersby jealous? Start by following these tips.

Buy some totes and uniformly sized boxes.

Sure, you could just pack your items into whatever boxes and bags you have lying around. But this makes it harder to stack your boxes, and you may have to worry about some of the reused boxes collapsing due to weakness. For a super-organized storage unit, you really should buy some plastic totes and some dedicated moving boxes — all in the same size. You can put the totes on the bottom; they'll protect your items just in case liquid ends up on the storage unit floor. Stack the boxes on top neatly. They should stack easily if they're all the same size.

Label consistently.

Come up with a box labeling scheme, and stick with it. A common technique is to put a heading on the box — this could be the name of the room or a general summary of what's going to be in the boxes. (For instance, the heading could be "kitchen" or "small appliances.") Then, use bullet points to list specific box contents. (For example, you could list "toaster, mixer, coffee maker" under "small appliances".) This not only makes your boxes look neat and tidy, but it keeps you from having to rifle through multiple boxes when you need to retrieve something, and that makes sure your storage unit stays neat over time.

Rent a larger storage unit.

This one is more important than it may originally seem. Decide what size storage unit you think you may need, and then opt for one that's a size up from that. This way, you will have plenty of space to walk between stacks of boxes. You won't have to stack things so high, either, which means you won't have to worry about things falling down and making a mess.

Packing a tidy, organized storage unit is not rocket science. It just requires a bit of extra planning and attention to detail when it comes to selecting your unit size, buying boxes, and labeling boxes.
