3 Tips To Help Prepare Your RV For Storage

Posted on

Most RV owners are not fortunate enough to spend all of their time on the road in search of adventure. This means needing to put their RV into storage in between adventures. Unfortunately, far too many of these individuals will ultimately find that their RV was damaged during its time in storage. This is often the result of failing to properly prepare the vehicle for the storage process. The three tips below can help you avoid making this mistake and ultimately ensure that your vehicle is damage free when you are once again ready to hit the open road.

Be Sure To Remove All Food Sources From Your RV

Many RV owners fail to consider the issue of pest control when placing their RV into storage. This can result in people returning to find their RV has become infested by common pests such as mice and cockroaches. You can help to avoid this same fate by ensuring that all food sources have been removed from your RV before it is placed into storage. In addition to removing any food items from the cupboards and refrigerator, you will also want to make sure that your interior is thoroughly vacuumed to remove any food crumbs. When vacuuming, be sure to clean under seats and in seat cushions as well.

Thoroughly Wash And Wax The Exterior Of Your RV

It is quite common for people to wait until they are ready to take their RV out of storage to wash and wax the exterior of their vehicle. This could be a huge mistake. This is because dust, dirt, bird droppings, and other common debris can eat through the protective coating on your auto paint. To prevent this type of damage it is important to make sure your vehicle's exterior is thoroughly washed shortly before placing it into storage. Choosing to also wax the exterior of your RV can help to prevent new debris from sticking to your paint during its time in storage.

Drain All Water From the Plumbing And Add Antifreeze To the Tanks

If you are planning to store your RV for the winter, you will want to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing and subsequently bursting. The first step in this process will be to remove all water from your plumbing system. Next, you will want to add a small amount of antifreeze to your water tanks to prevent any remaining water from freezing. Just be sure to have your plumbing system thoroughly flushed before refilling these tanks with water to ensure all antifreeze has been safely removed.
