Avoid Sweating All The Smaller Stuff With These Handy Storage Tips for Your Little Items

Posted on

If you are having to store your belongings for an extended period, you have a lot to contend with for sure. While it can be physically demanding to deal with everything from dressers to sofas, it can be mentally exhausting to contend with all the smaller items. From your socks to your small kitchen wares, all these little items can add up to a big mess if you're not careful when you place them in storage. Take a look at a few of the best tips to keep in mind as you place all your belongings, including the small stuff, in a self-storage facility.

Keep as much as you can right where it should be

A lot of smaller items that you find in the average household will have a place or a container of sorts. For instance, your socks, ties, and belts are probably tucked away in a dresser drawer in your bedroom. Whenever possible, keep smaller items in their place when you are packing to put everything in a self storage facility. Simply do something to secure the items that need to be secured so they don't shift around. For example, if you have a collection of pens and pencils in a desk drawer, pull those out and tuck them into a box and then stick them back in the drawer.

Use some small items to cushion breakables

Your kitchen towels, your curtains, and even your socks can be used to cushion breakables in larger boxes. This can cut down on how much filler material you have to use and can help you keep things contained. For instance, you can utilize everything from potholders and oven mitts to dish towels to wrap up your dishes, and all those things that belong in the kitchen. Therefore, when you pack all these small and large items together in a box, you will know where it belongs when you get your items out of storage.

Secure your smallest hardware pieces

It is common to have to do some disassembly of furniture when you place things in storage. It is also common for important parts and pieces to get lost during the transition from a house to a storage facility and then back to a house. If you do take something apart, drop the small parts in a zipper baggie and attach it to the furniture piece it came from with strong tape.
