Big Questions About Food And Seasonal RV Storage

Posted on

You have had a ton of fun in your RV for the season, but there is no place to keep it at home, and it just makes sense to tuck it away in a storage unit until it is time for new adventures. Before you store your RV in one of these facilities, you will have a lot of things to take care of. Most of the storage company owners will give you a list of ideas to prepare your RV for storage, but food-related storage concerns are always a topic of confusion. Here are a few common questions.

What about canned goods?

For the most part, the canned goods that you leave in your RV during storage will likely be OK. You do have to keep in mind, however, that temperature fluctuations can change the shelf life of some types of canned foods. Research has shown that temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit can actually cause harm to food in cans. Plus, nutrient loss is common if foods are stored above 75 degrees Fahrenheit for any prolonged period of time. If the unit where you plan to store your RV is going to get excessively hot, you should probably go ahead and remove your canned food items.

Is it fine to store dry food items in plastic storage containers?

You will see a lot of RVers pulling boxed pasta, rice, flour, and other dry grocery goods out of their cabinets before they store their RV. Some of these people may place all this shelf-stable food in a large container and leave it in their RV. However, it is actually best if you go ahead and remove these items from the RV completely. Keep in mind that if a rodent does happen to get into the unit, it will have no issues chewing right through a plastic storage container to get to your dry goods.

Can you keep drinks inside the RV?

Dinner wine, cases of soft drinks, bottled water, and beer can be road-trip necessities. However, when you are tucking your RV away in storage, it is best if you go ahead and remove all drinks and beverages. Canned sodas can actually bust if they get too hot, wine can be ruined in heat and cold, and bottled water can take on a bad taste after long-term storage. If you have bottled or canned juice, these should be removed as well.
